   Secondhand Rose is a 1983 Celestial ketch built in Xiamen City, China by the Xiamen Hanssheng Yacht Building Company. hanshengyacht.com. She spent her first years on the Texas coast and then has been in the Caribbean. I am the 4th owner, and have owned her for 8 years. My wife and I purchased her in St. Lucia and sailed her in the islands from Grenada to Puerto Rico during the winter months. She has been on the hard in the Varadaro Boatyard in Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico, for the summers the last three years, while we sailed the Leewards.
Secondhand Rose was spared by Rita but took a direct hit from Maria with 200+ MPH winds broadside. The three sail boats in the boatyard that were broadside to the winds were all blown over.

Damages, as have been communicated to me by phone and pictures and personal examination the end of April, 2018, are as follows:
Hole in port bow from a jack stand
Small hole in hull on poor side mid ships where she landed
Keel damage- the keel has a wrinkled line and in places obvious damage around the keel at the keel/hull junction. The entire keel may be unstable in it's attachment to the hull. The fuel tank is ruptured, but no hole could be visualised.
Masts and Rigging- The main mast and it's rigging appear intact; there is damage to one side of one spreader. The mizzen mast was knocked loose at the base where it was deck-stepped, but appears intact and straight. The spreader is damaged. One port side shroud was stressed enough to rip the chainplate from the boat, leaving a deck hole that is temporarily patched. The damage occurred when the mizzen struck a tall sport fisher next to Secondhand Rose when she was blown over. The mizzen is still hanging by the remaining standing rigging and is presently secured to the main mast. The rigging has not yet been inspected by a rigger to assess what may actually have to be replaced. The mast top transducers and some wiring must be replaced. Amazingly, the VHF antennas and wind direction indicators atop the masts appear intact.
On deck, a couple stansions are bent. The aft arch and handrails are intact. The wind generator is intact. The kayak was stored on deck, covered, and is undamaged.
Interior- things inside were tossed around pretty well, and there was mild caos because most of the deck equipment is stored below while on the hard. This has been straightened and cleaned up. Water damage is limited to an area along the sole/ wall junction on the port side when she lay on her side. Most equipment stored below is intact. All paperwork and equipment manuals are dry and intact. Dishes and glassware are intact in the galley lockers.
Electronics- all instruments and radios are intact. The transducer connections conditions are unknown, but the mizzen wiring is obviously separated. The radar dome is still mounted on the mizzen, and appears intact. GPS and Serius antennas were stored below. The smaller solar panel that was left operational to maintain the batteries continues to work well and the batteries are at full charge. Most of the lights and instruments powered up as normal. The engine control panel powered up as normal.
Engine room- the engine appears in normal position and and looks good. Batteries look good. The engine room floor panels look good and there is no evidence of the damage to the keel on the inside of the engine room.

As sailboats are designed to heel, most interior items were well secured, except those that were being stored below during summer lay-up, and they have been straightened up..

The major areas of damage are the keel/hull junction and the mizzen mast and standing rigging. Neither have been assessed professionally, so repair costs could vary a lot. The boat is not watertight at present and some local yard repair and patching would be necessary to move her. The local boatyard has competent craftsmen.

Repair estimates. These are very rough.
Masts and rigging. Based on a recent complete standing rigging replacement on a similar sized ketch of $12,000, and with the mizzen mast restored and spreader repaired, it could be up to $15,000 or Less, if the rigging (like the main) is still good and is used. The rigging was good before Maria.
Keel/hull junction repair and stabilization, repair inside and out, and hole repair. Based on rough estimate by fibreglass shop in the yard- about $15,000. Some interior work will be necessary to repair a little water damage along the port sole, and to restore after some dismantling needed to access the inside keel area for repair that is beneath the cabin sole and companionway. This could be an owner job.
Fuel tank repair/replace- Unknown.
Miscellaneous repairs. Some transducers and wiring, other as yet undiscovered damage. $5,000.

Total of about $35,000, could vary up or down depending on actual extent of the damage and owner participation.

Appraisal (Boat US) two years ago was in the $95,000-$100,000 range, including the $20,000 repower in 2014. You can find a couple sister boats for sale online. SHR is not insured. Has already cost $3000 to have her stood back up, plus storage since the hurricane. She will need only a few items to be ready and equipped to cruise once she is restored.
