Shimmering Sea is a 45' 2001 Hunter Passage 45 center cockpit sailboat. She has been upgraded and equipped for safe and comfortable cruising. It has a proven design that is well regarded for its sailing characteristics and spacious layout. The owner bought it new from Deaton Yacht Service Inc,. a Hunter Dealer located in Oriental N. C. and took possession of the boat in May 2003. Deaton Yacht Service Inc did the custom commissioning work that took until November 2004. Over $200,000 was spent for custom features and upgrades to turn this boat into a go-any-where bluewater cruiser. All systems have been upgraded or verified to be the best to insure safe and comfortable passages and all the comforts while cruising. This boat has been professionally maintained since new and the equipment has continued to be upgraded as needed. A 2016 survey showed the boat was in good condition with the hull showing no signs of blistering or delamination. It stated that “the hull and its support structure appears securely constructed and structurally sound.” See full specs for the long list of features and upgrades from the standard Hunter 450 Passage center cockpit sailboat.
You only have to go below to understand what Hunter had in mind when they developed the 450. Enormous wraparound windows bring copious amounts of light into the main saloon, enhancing what is already a very large space. The descent at the main companionway features a quasi-spiral stair element that deposits you just to port of centerline. Before you along the port side are a built-in longitudinal settee and, aft, a terrific galley in a U-shaped niche. Behind you to starboard, a six-person dinette, the nav station and finally a head lead you back to the master stateroom in the stern. There is a comfortable queen-size bed here with its own box spring, plus locations for the optional bath and washer/dryer mentioned earlier. A guest stateroom in the bow features its own queen-size berth and private head.
The theme continues on deck where real estate abounds and places to entertain, lounge or work the boat are numerous and at hand. A double anchor roller at the stemhead leads fair to a large anchor locker with a recessed windlass, leaving the foredeck unobstructed. Wide side decks make roaming fore and aft simple and safe. The cockpit, a large oval affair contained by the arch, offers easy sail handling and comfortable hanging. The after deck is grand, and the walk-on walk-off transom is equipped with deep lockers for aquatic toys and gear plus a freshwater shower for post-swim ablutions. A few of the amenities include:

The spacious INTERIOR is a blend of finely crafted teak joiner work, neutral colors and beautiful teak and holly sole. Large hatches and opening ports provide abundant natural lighting and ventilation. Excellent headroom and no closed in feeling like so many boats. Throughout the boat both inside and on deck are many custom stainless steel hand rails and pad eyes for additional safety at sea. Plus there are even custom mesh lee clothes for the forward berth, port and starboard settees and the aft berth (including a divider for the queen size aft berth) for added safety and comfort at sea. The lee cloths zip onto the lower half of the lee cloth that is permanently attached under the aforementioned sleeping berths. Numerous Calframo fans also keep the air moving for comfort.
The MAIN SALON is ideal for entertaining. There is a L-shaped settee with dining table and bench seat on starboard. The cushions are of leather construction. Opposite to port is a long settee with a fold down cocktail table 2 seat option. The dining table can be lifted to the overhead on the mast compression post and secured with a pin which opens the salon into a huge living area. The table can also be lowered to convert to a double berth. There are many storage bins and lockers behind the settees. In fact, there is storage everywhere on this boat which is most important for cruising far from home waters. The storage is triple what comes on a stock boat and was achieved by creating large storage areas under the floorboards by adding recessed hinges, latches for safety and edge banding to the floor boards in the staterooms and main salon.
The U-shaped GALLEY is to port and aft of the salon (see galley below) where it is convenient to both the salon and the cockpit since it is next to the companionway steps. The galley is open to the salon but is out of the flow of crew member traffic.
The GUEST STATEROOM and it's private head compartment are forward of the salon and boasts a Pullman style full double berth on starboard with numerous storage drawers below. To port is a settee, hanging locker and large storage areas. The GUEST HEAD COMPARTMENT is forward in the bow and complete with Raritan Compact II manual marine toilet (rebuilt 3-1-18) that works with no power, custom teak cabinetry, sink, Kohler Faucet, Corian countertop, vanity, mirror and shower.
Just aft of the salon to starboard is the NAVIGATION STATION which is also convenient to the cockpit. There is a large chart table with storage under and plenty of room for navigational equipment.
The MIDSHIP HEAD COMPARTMENT is just aft of the navigation station in the walkthrough to the master stateroom. There is a Vac-U-Flush marine toilet, custom teak cabinetry, sink, Kohler faucet, Corian countertop, vanity, mirror and hair dryer. There are dual entry doors so it can be private to the master stateroom and also accessible from the main salon.
The MASTER STATEROOM is the largest you can find on a 45' sailboat with excellent headroom. There is a walk around queen berth offset to port, a settee adjacent to starboard and the captains desk (OK, it can be used as a dressing table too) with a custom book case above. There is a large enclosed tub/shower that does double duty as a wet gear locker with glass door, fan and Kohler Adjustable fixed or hand held shower head just forward of the berth, all very private. There are many storage cabinets, storage bins, large hanging lockers, Vizio flat screen TV, Combomatic 2000 washer/dryer for clothes and several opening ports and hatches.
This beautiful and very functional interior is designed for cruising. The planning and forethought evident in the custom features and upgrades has made this boat a step above all the rest.
Galley is designed for convenience and ease of cooking whether at anchor or sea. It is equipped with a Sea Frost DC -5000 refrigerator and freezer DC powered system that was installed in 2004 so it could run off the batteries. The refrigerator is top or front opening and the freezer is top opening. Both are very well insulated and work perfectly. The freezer will keep ice cream frozen, not slushy! It has a compressor hour meter to keep track of time for maintenance and uses sea water for cooling. When in heavy seas there is even a custom SS hold down bar for top doors of Refrigerator and Freezer. It also has:
Many custom additions were made to the exterior and deck. Numerous stainless steel hand rails and padeyes for jack lines were added in strategic areas for safety on deck in big seas. Lifelines forward of the gates were replaced with higher custom made stanchions with reinforced bases that have 3 lifelines instead of the standard 2. Custom U shaped folding kayak holders were added to two of the stanchions on both sides of forward deck. Custom removable SS Dingy bracket (bracket clamps to dingy motor mount, helping secure dingy to deck for offshore sailing) with 4 folding padeyes added as tie downs to secure dingy to the deck in front the mast. On the stern are Kato Custom SS dingy davits with two custom SS kayak holders and 4 bike racks on top. Custom SS additions to the SS arch were an outboard motor mount on the port side and a shelf for the liferaft/Cooler on the starboard side. A custom SS handrail was added aft to the top of the arch for added safety. A SS eye was added to the end of the boom so the boom could become a crane that by using a block and tackle pulley system you can lift an outboard engine on and off the boat or lift a man overboard back onto the boat. Pelican hooks were added to the starboard and port lifelines at the stern to create a gate opening to facilitate this.
and shade the stern deck while at anchor
Misc. Alarms and Gauges:
Compare all these features to the features on a stock Hunter Passage 450 or 456 (almost identical model) center cockpit sailboat and there is no comparison. Why spent your time and money trying to properly up fit a stock sailboat when you can buy Shimmering Sea and the work has already been done.
