FOLLY II is a storied Stephens Brothers Express Cruiser Motor Yacht. The Stephens Brothers Boat Builders were renowned wooden vessel craftsmen, based in Stockton, CA. They built pleasure craft and in 1941 had a contract to build vessels for the US Military.
Originally commissioned by an infamous Rum Runner in California's bay area in the prohibition days, Folly II was delivered to her first owner on January 22, 1931. Made with the finest timbers available, this double planked teak/cedar Stephens Brothers Yacht was originally all teak finished on the exterior to enable her to travel at night, to quietly meet her marks in the Sacramento Delta to collect her load of rum and moonshine for delivery to San Francisco speakeasy clients. Back then, she was powered by Hall Scott "Invader" gasoline engines.
Her next owners, Mr. & Mrs. Clessie Cummins (he was the Founder and CEO of Cummins Diesel Engines company), re-powered Folly II in 1955 with twin Cummin's NH 220M diesel engines, which remain in full working condition to present day. This was the personal West Coast MY of Mr. & Mrs. Cummins for many years.
Mr. & Mrs. Sam Garrett took possession of Folly II in 1985. Mr. Garrett was a former surviving and decorated WWI bomber pilot who went on to invent the make-up brush which revolutionized the make-up industry's method for product application and was endorsed many famous Hollywood actors and actresses. Mr. Garrett's personal history and the elegant parties hosted in Monterey Bay, CA on Folly II is another exciting chapter in the vessel's history.
Included with this vessel is a deep set of historical documents, including the original purchase documents, retail advertisements featuring the yacht and Mr. Cummins, original design plan and much more.
The next owner of Folly II will carry forward her rich history and become part of her next chapter!
Stephens Bros. boats are highly prized as collectors’ items. Stephens Bros. boat owners meet every year at the Stephens Rendezvous, organized by the Northern California Fleet of the Classic Yacht Association, to show off these beautiful vessels.
FOLLY II was hauled out in September 2017:
