This 40' classic wooden motor-yacht was built by Matthews, in Port Clinton, Ohio in 1949. Matthews was one of the top builders of that era and many boats have been carefully maintained. She is fresh off a loving, ten year restoration including the most recent bottom job in March 2016. She is one VERY classy vessel. Beautiful Alwgipped Hull, new state-of-the-art sound system, NEW Raymarine Touchscreen E7 Radar and Chartplotter, underwater lights, new teak cockpit floor, new wiring, rebuilt head, combined with spectacular brightwork and new upholstery, make her an exceptional find.

40' classic wooden motor-yacht built by Matthews, in Port Clinton, Ohio in 1949. Matthews was one of the top builders of that era and many boats have been carefully maintained. She is fresh off a loving, ten year restoration. The original work was performed with great care and expertise by a true craftsman, the prior owner. This was to be his personal "Dream Boat". Unfortunately advancing age and health issues prevented him from finishing his dream.
The work he did perform was absolutely first class. He used only very high quality components, and the beautiful woodwork was done by himself, reflecting his prior experience as a shipwright at Stephens Shipyard in Stockton, California. The hull was refastened (2016), the boat was re-powered with two GM V-8 Crusader engines and Velvet Drive transmissions (1996). The boat was completely rewired with a new AC/DC distribution panel. Teak and mahogany abound. Overhead, the ceiling is dressed with mahogany beams.
The galley is down and is detailed with intricate inlayed wood and custom tiles. There is a deep porcelain sink. The stove is a two burner Origo alcohol/electric unit. There are two Norcold AC/DC refrigerators. The head is a Wilcox-Crittendon Skipper II...the best! The head was actually rebuilt in 2018 so it will last another 60 years! There is a stand up shower to port. For the fresh water system there is a new tank, SHUR-flo pump and SeaWard hot water heater.
The forward stateroom has two large bunks with built-in custom cabinets. There are two spectacular custom doghouse hatches that offer plenty of light and ventilation. In the pilothouse, the large convertible couch folds into a double bed and is quite comfortable for a second couple.
About seven years ago the original owner realized he would not be able to finish this project and he offered his "Dream" for sale. But it required a certain sort of buyer. The boat was only about 70% finished, the interior and plumbing were not yet completed and the exterior work had not yet begun. Fortunately one dream met up with another. Then, soon to be, new owner saw the potential, and saw that the heavy lifting had been done. He realized that this was a doable project and that he could realize his dream of owning a classic wooden motor-yacht.
The purchase was completed and the boat was shipped to Newport Beach to be finished under the watchful eye of PrimeTime Yachts. The actual work was performed at Larson's Shipyard, a longtime respected shipyard in Newport Beach. It is a small shipyard but they specialize in wooden classics.
The remaining work on the interior was finished in the same high quality style as the original. Additional wiring circuits were added. The plumbing was installed and finished. Exterior work was begun. The foredeck and pilothouse roof were taken down to bare wood, fiberglassed, primed and painted with Awlgrip. The bottom was also taken down to bare wood, re-fastened, reefed, caulked, primed and painted (2016). The transom was completely rebuilt with the outer layer of planks now one inch thick mahogany. This allowed for a beautiful, classic varnished mahogany transom. All bright work, chrome, brass, or bronze was buffed, polished, replaced or re-chromed. All new Awlripped white hull and beautiful brightwork freshly done in March 2016. Also a state of the art stereo system was installed as well as underwater lights in transom (2016).
A new fiberglass motor-yacht may have more speed, range and amenities. But, even for such a yacht, costing well over a million dollars, the classic style and traditional elegance of this Matthews will be hard to beat. Now, are you ready to feel like Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, or Humphrey Bogart?
