In the late 60’s Far East Yachts, managed by Claire Oberly, Mariner ketches were one of THE cruising boats of choice.  The first woman to single-hand across the Pacific was Sharon Sites Adams, on a Mariner 31 in 1969.  By the late 70’s, the Willian “Bill” Gardner designed Mariner 40, was built in fiberglass in the Taiwan Ta Yang yard.  This respected yard built boats by several designers, Dickson, Harris, Ladd, and another local designer, Robert Perry’s CT 37, Tayana 37 and later the Tayana 52.  Mariner 40’s were not built for marketing, but for comfort and safety at sea.  The Mariner 40 motion comfort number of 47.22 puts this boat in the company of the Hans Christian 41T, Tayana Vancouver 42, and more maneuverable than the early Colin Archer Pilot Cutter.

Wyakin was built by Ta Yang Yacht Building Co., Ltd., Kaohsiung Hsien, Taiwan for Mariner Marine Industries, 1340 West Seventh Street, Long Beach, California, 90813, and sold by Sailboats Unlimited-West, Inc., 2046 Westlake N., Seattle, WA 98109. Hull construction started in 1978, finished and delivered to Seattle in 1979.  The rigging, Perkins engine and engine-room sound insulation, was commissioned for the initial sale in 1980.

This rare Single-Owner boat has been loved and cared for since 1980 like few others.  Just look at the carved teak inside and out and artwork aboard!  Wyakin been kept in freshwater, and cruised annually in Puget Sound to North of Desolation Sound, but never been offshore!  If you are looking for a solid, strong, tasteful boat, welcome aboard, and make an offer soon!

From the Northwest styled carving above the fine clipper bow, to the teak taffrail, this is a unique and attractive boat.  There is a big heavy duty Lofrans Tigres Windlass on the bow for the heavy CQR anchor with 5/16 G4 chain, labeled every 50ft. There’s a big boat awning In the deck bag .  Note the handy belaying pins on the shroud boards, the varnished teak wheel and spacious cockpit, with taffrail.  The instruments are out of the way, protected by the mizzen mast or swing into the companionway as needed.  The teak doors can be lifted off and stored below, and there is  screen for the entry.

Stepping below, you first notice the double sinks close to the hinged stairs, a handy place for dropping wet gloves. The “U” shaped galley is secure and features a rare custom ordered, diesel 96S Wallas stove with well regulated convection oven.  There is a big cruiser cockpit loading icebox, with Adler Barbour freezer, and generous prep space and storage on the other side of the stove.  With the arched ceiling with laminated or carved beams, big windows provide plenty of light.  Opening ports, Dorades and a forward screened hatch ventilate when it’s warmer. The big navstation is to starboard, with displays, radios, and instruments.  A second “portable?” Norcold freezer is below.  The quarter berth is the usual garage, loaded with deck gear stored below.

The saloon has great storage and dinette to port with a table than can drop for more sleeping room, settee over big battery banks and more storage to starboard.  Forward is more storage, drawers and hanging lockers, a hidden Wallas heater, and the head to port.  The bright light head, with good teak storage, includes a manual toilet, sink, pressure H/C water, sit-down shower, grate, and shower sump in the bilge.  The teak and holly floor covers a very deep bilge, SS water tank, and large hot water heater.

In the v-berth, a forward hatch and two opening ports provide excellent ventilation.  There is great storage, shelves, drawers and bins, a good bunk for two with easy access to the clean well-lit anchor locker.

What is fine boat!  Come see this boat, fall in love with the clipper bow, beautiful shear line, and pretty stern - all things not found on any current production boat!  Look through these photos, make an appointment and bring your checkbook to make a good offer, before someone else grab’s this fine cruising boat!
