From the Freedom Express 39 Brochure
The Freedom 39-Express is a joint design effort of Tillotson-Pearson, Inc. and Ron Holland. Gel coat finished, hand laminated fiberglass with end grain balsa core. Laminates are graded to provide high strength in critical areas. The balsa core adds strength without undue weight; the coring also adds thermal and accousticaI insulation which is highly desired in both northern and southern sailing waters.
A similar hand laminated, cored, fiberglass construction is used In the deck. Heavy reinforcing is built-in for deck hardware. Molded-in nonskid areas. The T-shaped cockpit is an integral part of the deck with large scuppers that drain through the transom. Molded into the coaming are unique self draining storage compartments, on the starboard side for propane and to port for fenders and dock lines. Both compartments are easily accessed via "Gull Wing" hatches. The starboard cockpit seat is designed to securely hold an outboard motor. This compartment drains overboard and is provided with a security hasp.
