Very Rare, Highly Sought After XL Layout

Be sure to watch the Video!

Cabo Rico 38 cutters are famous for their rugged construction, and their sea kindly motion under way. Ruby Mae is a Cabo Rico 38 that enhances those characteristics because she has the rare “XL” cabin-layout (only six were made). As such she has two features critical for blue-water cruising and/or live-aboard sailors that other Cabo Rico’s lack: 1) a proper navigation station, and 2) her head/shower are located aft. The standard cabin-layout for Cabo Rico 38’s has a quasi nav-station that has no seat or storage capacity and the head and shower are forward.

A proper navigation-station, as on Ruby Mae, has a seated position, an opening nav-station compartment for storage of charts, etc., and a nav-station-facing “board” on which such things as radio, battery-monitor and navigation instruments can be mounted. Any experienced passage-making sailor will tell you that you will spend many hours each day at the nav-station, looking at digital charts, route planning, checking battery status, among other things. They will also tell you that using a head or shower that is forward in an active seaway is at a minimum challenging, and possibly dangerous. Ruby Mae also has her entire electrical board at the nav-station, rather than in the galley, as on conventional Cabo Rico 38’s.

The owners of Ruby Mae have been sailors for decades. They lived-aboard a 47’ cutter-rigged sloop for five years (2000-2005). So, they know blue-water sailing vessels. In 2005 they sold their sloop and built a home in the mountains of western Virginia. In 2010 their love of sailing led them to purchase Ruby Mae, which was at the time in somewhat diminished condition. Her layout was to their liking, but there were many systems on board which required, upgrade, or repair. Below is a list of the major items addressed in what amounted to a complete refit of the vessel. The refit was accomplished over several years, culminating in removing her engine for a complete rebuilding in 2018/2019.

  • Awlgrip (marine paint) topsides (hull above waterline), including cove-stripe and boot-stripe: $12,478.
  • Repair cockpit: remove weathered teak from seats and cockpit sole, repair scuppers, repair delaminated fiberglass on cockpit sole: $20,198.
  • Replace standing rigging: $4,186. (The stainless-steel shrouds and stays); they that should be replaced every 15-20 years of use but rarely are).
  • Replace cockpit pedestal-guard and engine/transmission controls (from existing antiquated “single-lever” controls): $4,653. (New pedestal required for new navigation equipment; see below; new engine controls are duel levers, one for engine speed, another for forward, neutral or aft).
  • Replace running-rigging. (These are the lines used to raise or lower sails (halyards), or to control sails (sheets) and spinnaker-pole.
  • New electronics: Raymarine wind/depth/and speed, Garmin GPS chart plotter and radar: $8,259.
  • New safety-lines: $1,180.
  • Repair/replace overhead cabin hatches, fans and lights: $919.
  • New Dodger stainless steel frame and canvas: $2,909.

  • Anchor wash-down system: $1,872.
  • New air conditioning system: $7,874
  • Head-sail: roller-furling system: $1,344.
