KAILANI was designed by the people who literally wrote the book on Offshore Cruising, Steve and Linda Dashew. Deerfoots are considered by many to be the finest shorthanded cruising yachts afloat. The Dashew concept of a long range cruiser that is fast, comfortable and easily sailed by a couple is perfectly embodied in the Deerfoot 63, KAILANI. She was built by Salthouse Brothers in New Zealand to the highest standards, and she will impress all who step aboard. She has safely carried her owners and family nearly twice around the world in comfort. The owners are moving to power for a couple of years with their new boat on the way and KAILANI is seriously for sale. Highly Recommended.

The Deerfoot 63 was the last design in the Deerfoot series and incorporates the best of its forebears. Details like her plumb bow, long waterline, watertight bulkheads, integrated water tank in the keel, sea chest, and balanced rudder were radical departures from the idea of what a cruising boat should be. Those details have proven to be winners and many builders have adapted those concepts into their designs with plumb bows and sugar scoops the norm thanks to the success of the Deerfoot concept. The Dashews also recognized that repairs and preventative maintenance are an integral part of the cruising life and intentionally designed the Deerfoot to segregate the machinery in a purpose-designed space aft behind a watertight bulkhead. Here you will find the main, the generator, most of the pumps and the refrigerator and HVAC compressors, all arranged with easy access. The design puts a premium on safety with subtle features such as a sturdy stainless steel pulpit completely surrounding the cockpit, three lifelines forward of the mast, slightly canted outboard decks so that the high side is level on a heel in a sea way, an unencumbered run for the jacklines from the cockpit to the bow pulpit and decks painted in reflective material. The deep spade rudder has a lower sacrificial break away section that leaves sufficient rudder area to continue to steer following a collision.
Entering the companionway a single cabin is found to port with a bunk room to starboard both with lockers. A drip grate is found at the bottom of the steps. Forward and to port is a sea head with separate Corian sink and stand up shower. The shower is configured with stainless steel hanging bar to make use as a wet locker. Also in the aft head is the ventless washer dryer (new 2015). Additional stowage is provided in a hanging space outboard of washer/dryer, as well as large cabinet outboard of the head. A short and narrow hallway leads from the steps to the salon. This hallway is intentionally narrow with offset doors providing crew safe passage when heeled in a seaway. To port is the large U-Shaped galley with a double sink on centerline, a gimballed propane stove and well insulated top/frontloading icebox and freezer. Tall fiddles and handholds are ubiquitous throughout the yacht. The nav station is located opposite the galley with bith forward and aft facing work spaces. Electronics are concealed in cabinets for aesthetic purposes and a Herman Miller Aeron chair makes for comfortable route planning. A long 7’ settee is found to starboard with a large L shaped settee to port both of which have lee cloths making them comfortable midship sea berths. The keel stepped mast fits snugly against the main bulkhead and a beautifully varnished table with removable fiddles completes the space. Forward of the salon is the master cabin with a king sized Pullman bunk to port, six large drawers under the bunk and a built in dresser with two large hanging lockers to starboard. Forward to starboard is a sink set in a Corian countertop with multiple cabinets and drawers below. A wet head to port completes the layout. Interior finishes are teak (much of it laminate over foam to reduce weight), mahogany and vinyl which create a rich inviting space with a semi Herreshoff style interior. Six large opening hatches provide light and ventilation throughout and 8 large stainless steel dorades provide additional ventilation while on passage. The machinery space is accessed through a cockpit locker. A dedicated propane locker and lazarette are aft. There is a large deep hold in the bow forward of a watertight bulkhead that has ample storage for sails, line, spare anchors and rode, bikes, dive gear and the many accouterments of the cruising life.
