The 425 hull has more freeboard than the 42. The designers at Sabre added seven niches in the bow and three niches in the stern to gain more interior volume and headroom (6'6''). The transom angle was drawn out for a more rakish look and, combined with the bow freeboard, resulted in six inches more LOA. This hull features conservative lines with a deep skeglet in front of the rudder and a fin keel. The rudder is partially balanced. The short draft wing keel draws 5 feet. The D/L ratio of this design is 193.
Sabre moved the mast forward in the re-design process. If you look at the interior layout of this design, I think you can see the reason the mast was moved. The rig of the 425 shows fore and aft lower shrouds and two spreaders. The forward mast location allows for mid-boom sheeting that comfortably clears the forward located companionway.
I could cruise comfortably with my family in this layout. There are two heads with the aft head accessible from the aft stateroom and the main cabin. The galley is big with lots of counter space. The engine is located under the center counter. Keeping the mast forward leaves room for an unobstructed area between the settees and a big drop leaf table. The port settee converts to a double berth. The aft stateroom is tucked behind the companionway ladder and features a large double berth.
This design carries 50 gallons of fuel and 120 gallons of water. The auxiliary is a Westerbeke 46. The hull is a balsa cored-laminate using isothalic resin above the waterline and vinylester resin below it.
