San Juan Composites (SJC), builder of the San Juan 38, describes its pleasure craft in terms of lobster boat styling; however, this luxury-laden vessel more resembles a miniature mega-yacht — a modern-day launch suitable for the Great Gatsby.
Built in Anacortes, Washington, the 38 foot Greg Marshall designed vessel functions as a sleek, speedy and newcomer-friendly weekend cruiser.
Given the vessel’s fluid profile, lightweight resin-infused composite structure and twin Yanmar 6LYA-STE turbocharged diesel engines, the San Juan 38 promises both performance and onboard elegance that rivals the big custom yachts.
‘This boat was built not only to suit Northwest conditions, but to be beautiful,” said Randy McCurdy, co-owner of SJC with Donald Campbell.
‘We have built a boat that won’t go out of style in a decade. Its traditional styling, ergonomics and quality insure a classic vessel with lasting value.”
The pilothouse features a well-equipped helm station with everything you need for navigation. The starboard helm seat is wide enough for two. There’s quick, easy access belowdecks to engines, batteries and filters via a gullwing hatch.
This boat also displayed impeccable fit and finish of the perfectly matched Burmese teak used throughout the vessel for railings, decking, the cabin interior and helm station and trim accents.
The San Juan 38 utilizes sophisticated Hyzod polycarbonate windows and an enclosure built by Barrett in Seattle — and the interior stayed warm and quiet through the test. Huge windows and a retractable sunroof offer virtually unobstructed 360 degree visibility.
The enormous cockpit and deck area of the San Juan 38 could hold a small army of guests. Dual sunpads offer plenty of space to stretch out and relax. The tri-part transom seat holds a hot and cold shower, a Force 10 barbecue and gear storage.
Despite its spirit and sleekness, the carefully conceived interior lends the boat to comfortable cruising. The pilothouse serves as both the nav station and interior social center.
A portside settee with a varnished teak table provides panoramic seating for four. The tabletop hides a handy pull-out chart drawer. Abaft the helm seat is a bar area with a counter, a bar sink, teak storage cabinet and an ice-maker.
The teak-accented galley offers Corian counters, a three burner Force 10 propane stove, microwave oven and a Nova Kool refrigerator/freezer.
Nearby, the head with separate shower features quality plumbing fixtures and lights by Cantalupi, sustaining an atmosphere of casual elegance.
Forward and aft staterooms provide sleeping accommodations for four.
