One of ONLY 5 in the WORLD! Yes I said WORLD known to exist.
In the Early 1900s the Nicholsons brothers developed a new craft which would enable the owners to come from their big boats before and after the competitions, naming it the Gelyce, which was nothing more then the first and last letter of their respective wives. The Gelyce class didn't go unnoticed... the Camper & Nicholsons received and accepted several commissions for similar crafts from other yachtsmen. About 8-10 being built for the Nicholsons and other families.
One of these was this one called the "Mavourneen" which was built for Major Sir Digby R. Peel MC.
Charles E. Nicholson claimed that his yacht tenders with a clean bottom and a sound propeller and a Daimler 105hp engine would have been able to produce 20 knots. As a matter of fact the best speed was recorded at 21.5 knots. Of course many Gelcyes had their name and engines changed over the years.
The hull was made of teak double diaganol planking (thickness 5/8") The upper planks are all full length with interesting detail. The forebutts of the three upper planks of the outer planking finished against the deck covering board.
Mavourneen had the Daimler engine replaced by a Ford V8. During the war she remained with the Peel family. By the mid 50's she was used by the Longmoore family as a tender to their Dragon class racing yacht. In 1987 she underwent an intensive restoration.
Since then she has had her engine replaced with an 8.1 Mercruiser and just recently in 2019 her woodwork was completely restored to her original luster. This is truly a piece of history with only 5 known in the world and one known in the US currently.
