1948 Rhodes Super 27 Sloop12m

NEVA is a Philip Rhodes designed masthead sloop built by Ferdinand (Red) Nimphius in Milwaukee, WI.  The “Super” 27 is a post war update of the 1939 R27 design competition awarded by the Fishers Island Yacht Club. A fast, lovely example of her era with the shear, bow and doghouse her designer is known for.  The “Super” has more cutaway, is 11” longer, 3” more beam with a modernized cabin and other updates as Rhodes responded to the market with a better understanding from his design work during the war.

NEVA was commissioned by a Chicago industrialist who worked with Philip Rhodes (when at Cox & Co. in NYC) and Red Nimphius, a leading custom builder located on the great lakes. Her materials and detail are top notch; Mahogany on oak, bronze fastened, lead ballast, bronze strapped, bronze hardware throughout. Laid teak decks, mahogany house, and joinery.

NEVA has been in regular use, raced and has benefitted from good ownership throughout her life. She has been on the east coast since the 80’s in Mass., Chesapeake Bay and Maine.

She is a strong and healthy vessel.  Her interior is bright with the doghouse windows offering full water view from the galley.  comes with her lifelines/stanchions/pulpits as well as baby stay, fittings for carrying a staysail.   Her cockpit is spacious, with a practical bridge deck and the aft of coaming/pivoting tiller.

She remains as original specification except an aluminum mast circa 1962. Significant efforts include; Rebuilt foredeck carlins and deck, garboard planks, toe rail, icebox, galley, Norpro/Isuzu diesel 2003 (~500hrs. 2021), rudder and bronze rudder castings, laminated frames at aft bulkhead (2020), holding tank and head (2021), new Fir/Spruce hollow boom (2020), custom German bronze traveler (2019), new marine high density foam cushions/custom covers (2017) and new sails (2020). Normal maintenance work includes brightwork, topsides, deck seams along with full interior repaint (2019).

Water tanks: 50 gal (25 each) in SS under salon berths

Fuel tank: 20 gal (single) in SS in stbd locker with Racor 500 primary filter

Driveline: Hurst reverse gear with 1” SS shaft, 2 bladed prop. (new cutlass bearing 2020)

Compass: Kelvin-White Constellation on bronze bracket

Electronics: Ray Marine; depth, knot meter and masthead: direction, speed. VHF radio

Ground tackle: 35 lb. Claw, 35 lb. Danforth, 200’ and 250’ of 5/8” three strand rode along with 20’ 3/8” chain.

Pumps: two automatic bilge pumps, manual gusher pump and two manual pumps at galley and head sink.

Head: Groco with 14-gallon poly holding tank. Deck access and Y valve for manual pump for thru hull

Layout:

Ventilated anchor locker with forward V berth, moving aft to head w/sink and cabinets to port and two hanging lockers/shelves to Stbd. Main salon with two single berths, lockers, and shelves. Galley with counter, sink, alcohol stove to port with SS deep icebox and counter to stbd. Full length cockpit with lockers port and stbd, and aft lazarette. Engine controls/panel to Stbd in footwell.

Points:

• Neva is a delight to sail, points well, tracks well, spins on her keel when asked to, rides well at anchor. She is competitive in the classic series (Vintage class A).
• Neva holds her shape, smells good, and is not a project. Topsides painted 2021 (Epifanes #40), water-based antifouling on the bottom. Brightwork wooded ~5 years ago. Annual upkeep. She does need some brightwork effort on several spots currently.
• Isuzu engine starts instantly, runs well and has been on ~90% biodiesel since 2014
• She has had four prior owners, the third and fourth spent significant sums on her. full body of data available: original Rhodes correspondence, builders instructions, original drawings (copies also in Rhodes collection at Mystic Seaport).
