Madrigal is a 41' Ray Hunt/Waldo Howland designed Concordia Yawl. She's hull #98, built at Abeking and Rasmussen in 1964. The original Concordia Yawl, Java, was penned in 1939 as a replacement for a Colin Archer double-ender lost by Waldo's father Lewellyn in a hurricane in 1938. He wanted a boat for daysailing, cruising and club racing around Buzzard's Bay and Cape Cod. Java proved to be a beautiful, highly versatile, well balanced boat. She did not go unnoticed, inquiries poured in and ultimately Hunt and Howland put the Concordia yawl in to production, with only slight modification, following WWII.
In 1953, a customer asked Ray Hunt to modify the 39’ slightly to optimize it to the CCCA rule. The design brief called for a boat with a slightly updated rig configuration, more beam, overall length and, critically for the rating, waterline length. The result was a boat that didn’t sacrifice any of the aesthetic or sailing characteristics of the original but benefited from a bit more stability and interior space. The 41' also proved to be a success and was ultimately put into production by the Concordia company, though considerable fewer were ever produced.
Madrigal’s original owner was named Robert P. Bass, from Concord, NH. He cruised and raced the boat extensively during his 25+ years of ownership, “Our sailing on Madrigal has been primarily in Northern climes, Maine, Nova Scotia, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Newfoundland, the south and west coasts of Ireland, the west coast of Scotland, the Orkneys, the Shetlands, and the west coast of Norway nearly as far as Trondheim. Passages have included two transatlantics, three races to Bermuda, five to Halifax, and many across the Gulf of Maine”
Her second owners found her and brought her here to Rockport Marine in the 1990’s. She’s had significant refit work (frames, floors, keelbolts, new cabin-house dynel…) and regular annual maintenance since. She still has her original paneled pine interior with its convertible dining/chart table and solid fuel cook stove. On deck she’s mostly original with a lot of beautiful bronze deck hardware few sensible upgrades where it counts: modern winches, wind instruments, a roller furler and radar. Madrigal is stunning boat and one of only Concordia 41’s currently on the market. She’s currently moored in Round Pond, ME ready for showings.
