Gusto is an extraordinary example of what precision care and dedication can do for a vessel. Built in Finland by Nautor Swan, her graceful lines, thoughtful interior and liberal use of solid teak and oversized hardware is a reflection of when boats were built to the highest standard. Gusto is a remarkable boat and has had significant upgrades. She is set up for double and short-handed sailing or a compliment of crew. Under previous ownership she underwent a complete refit including a watertight bulkhead/anchor locker forward, new teak decks, new engine, all new electrical wiring, two electric winches as well as new front-loading fridge and freezer and aft cabin bunks converted to a queen berth. The current owners continued with extensive upgrades and updates and have a full suite of racing and cruising sails under four years old, new standing rigging in 2020, running rigging, ISAF safety gear, six new Lewmar winches, new Max Prop, shaft and seals, bimini with 220W solar panels and the list goes on. Routine maintenance is recorded and completed and all deck hardware was re-bedded for a 2018 offshore voyage.
Over the past five years Gusto, has safely and swiftly cruised the Pacific Northwest, completed many distance races including Round the County, VanIsle 360, Swiftsure, Pacific NW Offshore (formerly Oregon Offshore), local Seattle races and delivery from Seattle to San Francisco to complete the Pac Cup, returning to Seattle on her own bottom from Hawaii. Along the way Gusto proved to be a true blue-water cruiser/racer. The cabin is perfectly laid out for long days underway in the ocean or ultimate comfort at anchor.
Gusto has had no expense spared and is in absolute sail away condition for any and all plans.

Descending the five-step companionway, one is greeted by brightly oiled teak bulkheads, plush cream faux leather upholstery and a surprising amount of light for this era of boat. The soft white overhead panels are held in place by teak stringers and teak battens line the hull sides. The cabin layout is designed with comfortable passage-making in mind- ample sea berths with lee cloths, solid teak handholds, and secure storage throughout.
The forward cabin features a convertible V-berth with massive sail storage below. Access below is easy through a hinged aluminum pipe frame with mesh stretched between. The hull is lined with teak battens and a large, 26” Lewmar deck hatch above provides a generous amount of light through the deck. At night, the original flip up red LED lights allow your eyes to adjust slowly to light when getting ready for watch.
Just aft is the forward head on the starboard side and generous storage area on the port side. This area is an extension of the forward cabin when the berth is made into a full bunk. There is a drop down canvas privacy curtain to close off the area to the main salon. The head features its own solid door, teak shower grate and single overhead Lewmar hatch for ventilation and light. Outboard against the hull are two shelved storage cabinets. The Lavac toilet is mounted athwart ships and there is a rectangular stainless sink and pressure water faucet at the sink retracts for use as a shower head.
The salon is next as you move aft. At centerline encapsulating the mast is a large drop leaf table with storage in the center. The table is removable if necessary for complete access to the keel bolts and bilge. To starboard is a long L shaped settee upholstered in bright white faux leather. Behind and below is storage and direct access to the burly stainless chain plates. Outboard are two large shelves with teak battens against the hull and a storage cabinet on either end. LED reading lights and dual action red and white overhead lights are generously placed throughout the cabin. Both linear settees make for an excellent sea berth with lee cloths. A shelf with fiddles and storage below is at the forward end and more shelves just aft. Mounted above the settee and outboard is the front opening refrigerator and freezer. Not being required to stack and re-stack food with a countertop accessed refrigerator is extremely desirable. The teak veneer covered doors match the rest of the interior remarkably well and compliment the space.
The galley is just aft of the port side settee and is open to the cabin but is secure and well appointed for cooking underway. The four-burner propane stove and oven is mounted outboard with a locker below for storage of pots and pans. To the right of the stove is a small countertop with tall fiddles and five drawers below. Above the counter and stove are two storage shelves concealed by tinted Plexiglas sliding doors. Peg storage is inside for customizing shapes for your own dishware. The countertop accessible icebox is just aft of the stove and is heavily insulated. After a 2,000 nm + journey from San Francisco to Hawaii the icebox still held ice upon arrival! A drain in the bottom allows water out and improves the longevity of the ice. A double basin stainless sink is mounted longitudinally with hot and cold pressure water. Above the sink is a storage cabinet with a clever, built in, dish drying rack to keep dishes off the counter and secure underway. To the right is another storage cabinet with shelves.
Opposite the galley, to starboard of the companionway stairs is the forward facing navigation station. A full size chart table features a traditional lifting top with storage beneath and from the comfortable seat you can reach all electronics and breaker panel. An ipad mount is on the forward bulkhead with Garmin GPS and handheld VHF charging block there as well. On the outboard bulkhead is the VHF, tank monitor, autopilot control, inverter control panel, AC & DC charging ports as well as space for the single side band radio to be mounted when necessary. The AC/DC panel is clearly laid out and includes analog volt meters and battery monitor. Over the last four years, the electrical system was updated with new wiring, lights, radio etc. There is a single red/white overhead LED light and a red chart light available for plotting. The back bulkhead forms a large hanging locker just aft with teak louvered doors.
Walking aft, the pass through space opens up into the aft cabin and adjoining head. The space has a delightful amount of natural light from the 22” Lewmar deck hatch and adequate ventilation from dorade cowl vents. There is a large storage compartment on the starboard side as you enter the space with shelves above the bunk along the hull. Teak battens along the hull make the space warm and inviting when climbing into bed. Under previous ownership the aft bunk was converted into a queen bunk on the starboard side while the port side remains a 1.5 pilot berth. New cushions were added in 2019 in a heather blue canvas. Under the bunks is access to the Maxwell engine start module (ESM), aft holding tank, fuel tanks, fuel manifold and Racors, and water heater. On the forward bulkhead of the cabin is a mounted dressing mirror, storage and access to the transmission and aft end of the engine. There is access to the dripless shaft below the sole.
On the port side of the cabin, concealed by a solid privacy door is the aft head. There is a Lavac toilet that is elevated 5” off the sole and a teak shower grate covers the shower sump. Outboard on the bulkhead are two storage cabinets with more below the sink. The vanity has large fiddles and stainless rectangular sink with pressure water and faucet that doubles as a shower head. A dorade cowl and single opening portlight allow good ventilation of the space.

Gusto’s hull is finished with the iconic white gelcoat with dark blue boot stripe and molded dark blue cove stripe and Swan insignia. A regular wax and polish job keeps her hull streak free and maintains its luster. Her hull is solid fiberglass with a lead ballasted keel bolted on. In 2017 the bolts were verified to not be pitted or weeping and were torqued to Nautor specification. During a 2020 haul out and bottom job the hull to keel joint was re-faired prior to bottom paint application. The bottom and Zincs are inspected regularly by a dive service and replaced as needed. In 2020 a new, more performance oriented spade rudder was designed by CCI Canada.
The deck is closed cell foam cored fiberglass with extra thick glued down teak decking that was replaced in 2007. They were lightly sanded and re-caulked where needed in 2021. At the same time new cleats were added and all sail tracks were re-bedded. The side decks are wide and uncluttered with sturdy stainless grab bars covering the dorade vents and 24” lifelines. The decks are slightly slanted to facilitate green water off of them and make the windward side comfortable to walk on while sailing. The 3” anodized aluminum toe rail surrounds the deck with limber holes every three inches. The toe rail is bonded with adhesive and mechanically secured into the deck with screws every 4”.
Gusto’s cockpit is ideally laid out for family afternoon sailing, or offshore racing and everything in-between. Her bridge deck configuration makes for a working cockpit aft near the helm and forward, out of the elements, under the dodger is a seating area free of clutter. The teak cockpit decking is still 10mm thick and remains smooth and bright. A bimini was added in 2017 with 220w of solar panels installed in 2018 to optimize battery capacity while cruising. On the starboard pulpit is a mount for an outboard crane hoist that slides into place and a rail mounted Edson outboard bracket. A stainless 40” helm is covered by a leather wrap and is mounted on a Whitlock steering pedestal. The steering was upgraded to rod and pinion by the previous owner and provides excellent feed back at the helm. Windlass controls are available here as well as autopilot, tablet mount and single lever throttle and shifter control. Under the aft seating is ample storage and propane locker on the port side. The previous owner added a fully water tight bulkhead forward that serves as a dedicated anchor and fender locker as well as a safety crash box.

The main and jib can both be tended within arms reach of the helm with the option to use the two electric primary winches stationed there. The forward cockpit is well protected by the dodger and has all control lines leading to Spinlock clutches. Reefing is done safely without leaving the cockpit and two cabin top winches are dedicated just for these clutches. A total of eight winches are in the cockpit, six of which are Lewmar EVO’s installed new in 2018. Low friction rings are liberally placed for better lead angles and to lessen drilling holes in the deck.
