Designer Willam Lapworth, "Gentleman Bill" had more early offshore sailing experience than many boat designers. His Cal 40, was considered a daring design, and won most of the races in the early 70s. The CAL 39, introduced in 1971, was one of the first defining "Performance Cruisers", and the boat remained in production thru 1986. A well-balanced boat with a fast keel, big spade rudder, stiff rig and generous accommodations, the Cal 39 is a solid stable sailing boat that likes to go to windward. Sleeps six two couples two singles. Owners cabin is forward with V berth and filler cushion for double bed, drawers and hanging locker. Enclosed head compartment midships to port with vanity & sink with hot & cold pressure water, New composting head, hand held shower w sump pump. Hanging locker is opposite. The main salon has L-shaped settee to port that converts to a double bed, settee/single berth opposite with storage outboard. The large galley is aft to port with lots of counter space and in the middle of the action yet out of the way. Equipped with gimballed propane stove/oven, Stainless sinks with H&C pressure water, molded ice box with refrigeration, storage space outboard and below. The diesel inboard engine is below the galley sinks and companionway with excellent service access and weight smartly located midships. A navigators table is opposite with storage and a large open quarter berth aft.
