From a Practical Sailor Review:
"A boat that will get you there fast, safely, and in comfort is a highly desirable type of boat for this kind of cruising. From a performance viewpoint, the 38 meets those requirements."
C&C was a power house yacht builder from the 60's to late 1980's. They virtually invented the racer/cruiser concept. That, married with an outstanding reputation for quality build enabled C&C to dominate the market in Canada with over 50% market share and a whopping 20% share of the US market as well. The 38 MkIII was a completely new design, introduced in 1985. This model represents an evolution of popular C&C 37 racer/cruiser with beamier hull and upgraded interior.
The sailing qualities are excellent. Upwind it can be balanced to track "hands off". Downwind it is easy to keep under the spinnaker, even when doing 12kts in 25kts+ of true breeze. It exhibits little of the tendency that other IOR boats of this vintage have to spin out when pressed downwind.
C&C was a pioneer in composite construction utilizing end-grain balsa coring in the hull and deck to increase stiffness and reduce weight. Other notable features: through-bolted deck hardware with backing plates, bronze seacocks and a keel-stepped mast that doesn’t sit corroding in bilge water.
As to Shearwater specifically, she presents as a yacht well above average condition for her age, due in part to the fact that the previous owner had her for 30+ years and was meticulous in maintenance and constant upgrades. The rigging was replaced in 2009, new halyards in 2020, depth and log 2010,Edson steering refitted in 2015. The interior was not neglected either: new teak and holly cabin sole in 2008, new Sunbrella interior fabrics as well.
The current owners have had Shearwater for just a few months. Tragically an unfortunate family situation necessitates her sale.
Shearwater is located on Roatan, Honduras which lies in the heart of North Western Caribbean cruising grounds. There are literally dozens of well protected anchorages in and around Roatan, a few hours sail will take you to the neighboring islands of Guanaja and Utila as well as the many cays of Los Cayos Cochinos. Further adventure awaits after overnight sails to both Belize and Guatemala. Cancun and the Mexican Riviera are only 300 miles distant.
Roatan itself, long a hidden gem frequented by divers (it has the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world) is fast becoming a go-to vacation spot and attracting a significant influx of ex-pats, already a thriving community including sailors from all over the world. Keeping pace is the yachting industry with a number of inexpensive marinas (more to come) and boat yards.
In summary, if you are looking for a comfortable, well-maintained family cruiser in a beautiful location, Shearwater might just be what you are looking for. She is USCG Documented.
