"In his book, Choice Yacht Designs, Richard Henderson credits the inspiration of the Block Island 40 to the Sparkman & Stephens-designed Finnisterre, a centerboard yawl that won the Bermuda Race three consecutive times. That boat led to the production model Nevins 40, and later to several similar boats by other designers. The Block Island 40 and Hinckley Bermuda 40, both drawn by William H. Tripp, Jr., are the best known. All of these classic designs are stunningly beautiful examples of the now bygone era of proper sailing yachts. They are incredibly sea kindly vessels with the visual elegance and grace of mythical goddesses.Manitou was built by Migrator Yachts, the most recent of the respected builders of the Block Island." 40. Manitou has been very well maintained and excellent example of classic boatbuilding.
A change in the owner's plans has made this fine yacht available. The bottom was repainted in September 2021 and the maxprop prop coated with propspeed. Manitou was sailed in the Chesapeake Bay until being sold and shipped to the West Coast in 2017.
The electronics have been upgraded with Raymarine hybrid touch digital Radar/Chartplotter, A new I70 repeated for wind/depth and speed has been installed, and AIS integrates into the system via the VHF radio.
Manitou also features reverse cycle airconditioning for comfort at the dock. a
Maintou features a traditional accommodation plan. The interior is finished with all vertical surfaces being off-white laminate or teak marine plywood, trimmed with solid teak. The cabin sole is solid teak and is in excellent condition. The headliner was replaced by Hinckley in 2016. Ash ceiling strips line the hull outboard of the berths, and all woodwork is finished in rubbed effect varnish. All of the lockers have louvered doors for ventilation, and passage doors are paneled teak The cabin cushions are light teal Ultrasuede, and the forward berth cushions are currently being replaced.
Forward the owner's stateroom features traditional V-berths that are 6'8" long with 5" cushions. A filler cushion completes the berths to form a double. Ash ceiling strips line the hull, and there is a bureau with two drawers, 2 lockers, a hanging locker, and additional storage under the berths. There are two bulkhead-mounted lights and an overhead light. Ventilation is provided by 2 opening ports and a large overhead hatch. There is a door from the stateroom to the head as well.
Aft, to port, is the spacious head area with access from the main salon. The head features a has a molded shower pan with teak grates, a vanity with stainless steel sink and showerhead/faucet, and a vanity with storage. Towel storage cabinet. The head has both an overboard discharge and a 30-gallon holding tank. Ventilation is provided by a dorade vent and an opening port.
Directly across from the head is a hanging locker and a chest of drawers.
The main cabin layout consists of a U-shaped settee to port with a floor-mounted custom fold-out table. When unfolded, there is seating for eight on the starboard settee and the U-shaped port settee. All interior upholstery is teal Ultrasuede and is in beautiful condition and interior appointments such as rugs and pillows are included.
The settee can be used as a single berth. There is storage found behind the backrest, and there are lockers and a book rack above. To starboard settee which slides out to form a single berth. Ventilation is provided by a large overhead Lewmar hatch, a dorade vent, and 8 opening ports for excellent ventilation. A new "Sound Down" headliner was installed at Hinckley (2016). Manitou has reverse-cycle air conditioning while at the dock and an Espar diesel heater. The Espar unit is currently nonfunctional yet fully ducted, wired, and plumbed to diesel.
Aft of the main cabin, to the port of the companionway, is the U-shaped galley, designed for use while sailing offshore. A large, insulated, 7.5 cu. ft. refrigerator with a Sea Frost refrigeration system with an engine-driven compressor and cold plate. A gimbaled Force 10 Propane stove with an oven with cover to expand counter space is outboard in the galley A safety bar and harness hooks are installed for cooking underway. Aft is a double Stainless-Steel sink with a hot and cold pressure water faucet. Above the counters and sink are large storage lockers, dish racks, and drawers. There is an additional storage locker under the sink. Ventilation is provided with a large outboard opening port and a cockpit port.
The navigation station is to starboard of the companionway. The forward-facing navigation table features a lift-up top with storage below as well as several and several drawers under. There is a seat with storage under it, followed by a hanging locker with the louvered teak door. On the outboard side of the nav station are the VHF radio, Autohelm multi-display, 12v outlet, stereo, and battery monitors. Aft of the nav station is a large hanging locker with a teak louvered door.
Above the removable engine covers and companionway ladder are the 110V and 12V electrical panels and battery switches. The ladder and engine cover are easily removed to provide access to the Yanmar diesel and its components.
The Galley is located to port at the base of the companionway.
