Shimmer is a 30 foot sloop custom designed by Chuck Paine. She has a modified fin keel, skeg-mounted rudder, wheel steering, and has proved to be wonderful cruising sailboat that is easy to maneuver in a crowded harbor.
Shimmer was first launched late in fall of 1998 and started cruising seriously the following year. Between 1999 and 2017 she has taken us safely to all the major destinations around Buzzards Bay and south of Cape Cod including Cutty Hunk, Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Cape Cod Canal as well as up to Penobscot Bay in Maine.
The boat is cold molded – i.e. an inner layer of 5/8” thick strip planking followed by three layers of 1/8” thick veneer planks (red cedar, red cedar, and meranti respectively) installed at alternating 45 degree angles – all laminated together with WEST System epoxy. The hull has a minimum of three coats of epoxy inside and out (more in the bilges) to block water infiltration plus one layer of fiberglass cloth sheathing on the outside. Final hull finish is Awlgrip paint resulting in a hull that, in the words of one boat surveyor, is “like glass”. This approach to hull construction provides a one inch thick hull which is light weight and extraordinarily strong.
Shimmer was launched in late 1998. She has had one trip to Penobscot Bay. Otherwise used for day sailing in Buzzards Bay with occasional overnighter.
