Launched in 2013 by Columbus, Leudin I (Ex Eleonora III) is the first of the Sport Hybrid 40 m award-winning series. The naval architecture and exterior design of this all-aluminum semi-displacement super-yacht are by Hydro Tec in partnership with Columbus. Powered by an advanced hybrid propulsion for greater performance and lower environmental impact, she reaches a maximum speed of 22 kt, a range of 2,500nm at 15 kt and is RINA classed, LY2 and Green Plus (Y) compliant. Her interiors by Hot Lab are characterized by large windows to maximize natural light and eco-friendly materials, while her generously sized deck space provides several sunning and dining solutions made more enjoyable by the highly reduced roll motion effect of the ultra-modern fins zero-speed stabilizer system.
The aim of the Sport Hybrid line is to provide owners with fast sporting yachts without forgoing the comfort, elegance and style of mega yachts. The sleek aggressive lines are designed to merge seamlessly with the environment and enhance the pleasure of luxury yachting in harmony with the sea. Sport indicates the high performances of this Superyacht, equipped with two diesel engines which will give a top speed of 20 knots, with the ability to cruise at 15 knots. The Sport Hybrid line is environmentally friendly and technologically advanced, providing a unique setting for owners who wish to enjoy the sea while preserving the environment. The hull has been designed using CDF analysis and tank tests, in order to optimize the fuel consumption at low and medium speed without sacrificing performances at higher speeds. 40S Hybrid is powered with advanced hybrid propulsion, combining high performance, on a top speed of 20 knots with reduced environmental impact. The choice of using a hybrid system was the result of a deep study done from Palumbo shipyard together with RINA classification society, which let the Columbus Sport hybrid 40m be the first yacht with the hybrid propulsion as an additional notation class issued by RINA; EFP Hybrid Propulsion (Y), Aut CCS (Y), Green Plus (Y) Platinum. The hybrid concept is a main improvement that, thanks to two electrical motors fitted n the gearboxes, allows the 40S hybrid to cruise at 8 knots using only the gensets and the electrical motors. Electrical propulsion system Eco Prop Hybrid will allow navigating at low speed with very limited consumption, high comfort and almost no noise. On board you will be able to experience the thrill of performance and maximum comfort, typical of hybrid yachts. The same hybrid power train can be used as shaft generator using the excess power not used for diesel engines. The hybrid system will allow the yacht to cruise in extremely quiet and vibration free conditions. When cruising with the main engine, the two electrical motors will work as shaft generators allowing nonstop auxiliary generators during long transit.

The Master Cabin is located on-deck all the way forward and has the following features.
Circular stairway to the bridge area and sky lounge. Each door on the boat is covered in a beautiful high quality Italian leather, designed with chrome door handle guards also port and stbd. Electric doors allow access from the main deck salon have leather covering on the doors and handles with chrome plates. Stbd side entrance, forward to the salon area, there is an electric side entry door that leads to the guest area which is separated by the automatic closing water type door separating crew quarters and guest cabins.

Upper Deck Aft
The engine room is accessible from the port side deck or via the aft deck through the tender garage. The aft bulkhead door to the tender garage is watertight. The area is insulated and sheathed in bondel plate. Deck is aluminum diamond plate. The main switchboard is port aft and gear and equipment is accessible but some places very difficult to access and remove valves, coolers and equipment. Ventilation via 2 x Delta T fans is very good. There is no control room.
Generators: Port Stbd Aft
The yacht is fitted with three (3) generators four (4) point resilient mounted service generator sets in sound enclosures. The port and starboard generators are connected to the main switchboard with the aft generator connected to the DG-3 switchboard. All generators can be operated individually or in parallel with the other generators. The main generators diesel engines are John Deere six (6) cylinder in line four stroke and turbocharged. Both generators are 24 VDC electric start. Generator control is via the main switchboard and alarm monitoring connections are provided. The generator fuel supplies are from the day tanks via duplex Racor fuel filters with unused fuel being sent back to the day tanks. The generators are provided with cooling sea water from their individual sea water intakes with strainers and isolation valves. There are three (3) diesel generator sets as described under the heading of ''GENERATORS''. These are star wound to produce 400V 50Hz 3Ph with no neutral. Each of the generators are connected to the MSB using motorized breakers. All generators an be run by individually or in parallel mode.
Ecoprop Motor / Generators:
The two (2) motor / generators are connected to the main engine reverse / reduction gear via a hydrauliclly operated Steibel clutch and a flexible Vulkan coupling. The motor / generator power has been limited to 75kW. With the main engines running between 1100 - 1800 RPM, one of the motor / generators will feed the main switchboard and power to the yacht via one of the water cooled frequency drives. The motor / generators are not arranged for parallel operation. With the main engines off and all three (3) generators running in parallel, both motor / generators are supplied power from the main switchboard via another water cooled frequency drive to drive the main propulsion shafts.

Compressed Air System:
There is supplied an air condition and ventilation system on board designed by Condaria. The central chiller unit provides chilled water at approx. 6 degrees C to fan coil units located throughout the vessel and to several fresh air make up units. Mechanical ventilation is provided by the aforementioned fresh air handlers and by exhaust fans. There is also a separate mini chiller to provide cooling to the shore converter and electrical propulsion system.
The main chiller plant is a reverse cycle type which supplies water during the summer at 6 degrees C and in the winter at 37 degrees C. The refrigerant is condensed using a fresh water closed loop which in turns is cooled by a separate salt water circuit and a plate type heat exchanger. The chiller plant consists of:

Cooling Water Pumps:
The cooling water pumps are hard mounted on the aft section of the chiller skid. They are fitted with isolation ball valves with one pump in operation and the other in standby. They supply fresh cooling water to the chiller plant condensers which then flows through a sea water cooled heat exchanger.
Sea Water Pumps:
The two (2) pumps are hard mounted in a stainless steel drip tray below sewage treatment plant and supply cooling water to the plate type heat exchanger. Both pumps are fitted with butterfly isolation valve and only one pump is used with the other in standby. Intake is in the bilge below the pumps with sea strainer.
The mini chiller supplies cold water to the electrical propulsion motor and frequency drives as well as the shore power converter. Two (2) compressor/condensers units are salt water cooled by either of the two (2) Calpeda BA 40-110A pumps located below the sewage treatment plant. Chilled water is circulated to the end users using a single Calpeda C22 / 1E pump located next tot he main chilled water pumps.
Reverse / Reduction Gears:
The yacht is fitted with two (2) main reverse / reduction gears. The gears are semi flexibly mounted to the engine side girders aft of the main engines/ The gears are coupled to the main engines via a flexible elastic coupling. Controls are electronic / electric over hydraulic for the clutches. The gears are fitted with integral oil pump, fitters, heat exchanger and servo valve blosk. When the main engines are shut down and the yacht is in electric motor drive the gears are supplied lubrication oil by stand-alone oil pumps and cooled by stand-alone sea water pumps.

The yacht is provided with electrical generation and distribution systems for alternating and direct current. The alternating current is designed for single and three phase power and operates at 400/230 volts at 50Hz. The direct current system is a 24V floating system. The vessel also has a Hybrid Propulsion system by Ecoprop. There are motor generators in-line with the main engines. They receive power from the main generators which can propel the vessel up to 7 knots. These motor generators can also produce 400 volt 3-phase. A comprehensive type approved alarm and monitoring system has been installed on the yacht. There are two (2) CPU's (computers) one as the main CPU with the other as a back-up connected together by a dual Ethernet network giving full redundancy of the system. There are multiple graphics for the majority of the ships systems and many valves and pumps can be operated through this system. The system is arranged for UMS (unmanned machinery space) operation and has been interconnected using a combination of CanBus and Ethernet network cables. The system comprises of:

The decks are all overlaid in teak planking. Seaming is reportedly Sikaflex (black). Seams are 5 mm wide with food depth (6-8 mm). Decking is believed to be 12 mm thick but not determined. Planks are 55 mm wide with no fasteners.

How Hybrid Works
Columbus yachts Hybrid Propulsion System combines several elements known for their reliability into a single whole, creating a revolutionary flexible system while maintaining a very friendly user interface. Benefits related to a Hybrid Propulsion System are to be considered as the sum of the specific benefits relate dot each “MODE”. Using a conventional Propulsion System (engine, gearbox, shaft, propeller), changes were made to the gearbox. A PTI/PTO (Power Take In / Power Take Out) was installed to the gearbox, the same kind of PTO used for hydraulic stabilizers before the advent of separate hydraulic power packs, along with an electric motor and a hydraulic clutch. On the Columbus 40M Sport Hybrid, the electric motor is considered another service element, together with the bow thruster, the galley, and so on. The motor is connected to the primary electric panel and powered by two generators. Using the PTI/PTO, the electric motor has three electric operational modes, easily controlled by pressing a button on the touch screen.
Electric Operational Mode
This technology, which is several decades old, is often applied on ferries and cruise ships, and is known as diesel electric propulsion. The generators are running and provide electric power to the electric panel which then regulate the electric motor as a service element. Each electric motor on the Columbus 40M Sport Hybrid absorbs 75 kw out of the available 200 kw, 100 kw per generator, for a total of 150 kw. 50 kw are therefore free for other uses. The clutch is engaged, the electric motor turns the gearbox which in turn revolves the propeller.
Benefits related to the “Electric Operational Mode”
When in “Electric Mode”, the yacht behaves like a sailboat: zero noise, exhaust and vibration, while her speed is relatively slow. Each motor’s upper limit of 75 kw gives the yacht a top speed of 8 knots, but in complete silence. Another plus related to the Electric Mode is the fuel consumption reduction: approximately 80 liters/hour. A remarkable advantage for a 40M yacht.
